The Boys Choir “Graz Kapellknaben”
The Graz Boys Choir “Grazer Kapellknaben” has been dedicated from its inception in 2003 to excellence in voice, chorus and ensemble singing.
The choir educates 100 boys between 4 and 24 years, selecting the most talented ones for the choir. The boys are recruited in primary schools throughout Graz and surrounding areas. As well as weekly rehearsals (1 hour for younger children, 4 hours for older ones) each child has his own solo voice lesson each week. The summer camp during holidays is a very important part of education, both for music and social skills. All the teachers are highly experienced and qualified in singing or conducting. 2006 was a breakthrough year for the choir in the field of opera, when the choir appeared at the Graz Opera in “The Three Boys in The Magic Flute” by Mozart , and at the Volksoper in Vienna in Britten’s “The Elves in A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Classical music and oratories (Mozart Requiem, Bach Christmas Oratory, Passions) are a very important part of the choir’s repertoire. The choir’s performances have been broadcast on both television and radio, and their CD “Styrian Advent and Christmas Songs” is a very popular recording. The choir has sung extensively in Austria and Germany and has also toured Greece, Hungary, Ukraine and USA. 2018 marks their first tour to Australia. Their performances have delighted audiences and critics alike, with reviewers highly praising the angelic voices, the dedication, richness and excellence of the choir, and the magnificent conducting of their artistic director, Matthias Unterkofler.
